Super Speedy iPhone 3G S
Apple did not unveil a new iPhone that was dramatically different from its previous 3G iteration at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, though its latest version comes with an "S" added behind the name.
That "S", according to Apple, stands for "Speed", which means, everything you do on this version promises to be two times faster than its predecessor - be it launching applications, loading web pages or viewing email attachments.
Apple has also upgraded the camera on its S model to a modest 3-megapixel, with video capturing and simple footage editing capabilities, so you can shoot and upload on YouTube or your PC or Mac instantly.
Voice Control is one of the new features of iPhone 3G S, and it basically lets you call your contacts or play the same song on your iTunes repeatedly by just speaking to it.
Another new feature not found on the iPhone 3G is a built-in digital compass, which works with Google Maps to continually orientate the maps in the direction you're driving.
Finally, with the faster speed and new features, comes the best perk of this S version, and that is longer talk time, audio and video playback, and Wi-Fi usage, thanks to an improved battery life.
The arrival of the iPhone 3G S means its two-year-old brethren gets a $100 price reduction to $99, which could pose a significant challenge to the likes of Research In Motion or RIM (which makes BlackBerry phones) and Palm, especially with the latter having just announced the new Palm Pre.
Apple's price-cuts could also encourage current non-iPhone users to switch to the lower-priced 3G model, and demonstrated the company's desire to increase market share by reaching out to cost-conscious consumers.
