First Ironkids Triathlon successfully held at Phuket's new world class sports campus for all
PHUKET, THAILAND – THANYAPURA, Phuket’s unrivalled sports campus for all, hosted the
first IronKids Phuket Triathlon event at Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club
(TSLC) on 23 April 2011. More than one hundred youth athletes swam in Thanyapura’s
50-metre Olympic-standard swimming pool, biked on a closed, quiet shaded road
and finished the last 500-metres of the run on the spring-loaded athletics
track.
In
combination with the 2011 opening of Thanyapura, April’s inaugural IronKids
Phuket Triathlon further solidifies Phuket’s growing global reputation for
major triathlons, marathons and Ironman. TLSC has officially partnered with
World Triathlon Corporation’s (WTC) global youth programme, IronKids, for this
event.
The
event was a great success with 113 children participating. Participants came
from Phuket as well as Bangkok, Kuala
Lumpur, Singapore
and Malaysia
to make an international field of young athletes.
The
IronKids Phuket Triathlon took place from 8:30am until 10am on 23 April, with
children grouped according to three separate age divisions and in age
appropriate course distances. Though some were seasoned athletes, for most
participants IronKids Phuket Triathlon was their first ever Triathlon.
A
Phuket International Academy student, Amnaht Nicholas Murphy from the 14 – 15
year old group set the fastest overall time of 45 minutes and 28 seconds on the
course comprising a 300 metre swim, 12 kilometre bike ride and 3 kilometre run.
Closely following Murphy, Dylan Nyerges from Bangkok competing in the 12-13 year old group
posted a time of 47 minutes and 9 seconds. Both took home the first place
trophy for their age division.
The
fastest female on the course was from the 12-13 age division - Zoe Bowden, from
Garden International
School in Kuala
Lumpur, with a finishing time of 51 minutes and 55 seconds, closely
followed by Sian Wilson, competing in the 14-15 age division, and also from Garden International
School, with a finishing
time of 51minutes and 55 seconds. Both promising athletes took the first place
trophies for their age groups.
First
place in the other age groups for boys and girls were Chris Thomson (Boys 9 –
11), Syami Yapp (Girls 9 – 11), Ben McMillan (Boys 6 – 8) and Mia O'Leary
(Girls 6 – 8). The 1st place for mixed teams went to Sang Min Lee,
Joshua Lim and Mark Van Loo.
In
the Corporate Sponsored Teams category, DaVinci, Headstart & 91.5FM Teams
came first place, followed by Team Image Asia and Team Quest. These Corporate
Sponsors kindly supported 10 children each to enter IronKids Phuket Triathlon.
All
results will be posted on the www.ironkidsphuket.com
website by the end of this week and participating children will be able to
download a certificate with their race times included.
