INFORMATION: Andrew Spence began his musical experience at the age of 5, studying piano and rhythm for children in the suburbs of Vancouver, BC, Canada. At 13, he traded time spent on piano for saxophone study. The first thing Spence ever played on a sax was "Tequila", and soon thereafter went growling and blues riffing his way into school stardom as the kid with the smokin' sax chops. His natural ear and musicianship helped Andrew excel rapidly on the horn. He earned a spot playing with the reputable Douglas College Community Stage Band while still in high school, as well as scooping up soloist awards at local and national festivals.

Spence did not pursue the sax past high school, instead he followed his other passion, mixing records. The two arts would later collide with stellar results. With DJ roots tracing back to 1988, Andrew is now a 2 decade turntable veteran . He can light up a set of decks with the adept precision of a true Zen Master. He has experience in Breakbeat, Hiphop, R&B, House, Drum & Bass, Jazz, Nu Jazz, Lounge, and the list of sub-genres drones on...

Back to the sax story! After an 8 year break, Spence picked up the alto sax that he had played in Jr. High, a Yamaha YAS-62 which he still plays partially out of sentimental attachment, and got back to it. He re-united with Vancouver saxophone Guru, Stan Karp, and dove into full-time study while living in the west end of downtown Vancouver. He started bringing his sax to the nightclubs that he and his friends spun at, plugged in a mic, and went off on the sax live over the beats. This naturally led to numerous playing opportunities in clubs and also in recording studios. He continued following Karp's private instruction while attending the Jazz Studies program at Capilano College in North Vancouver.

After 3 years of College and testing the waters around town as a musician, Andrew was recruited by local 12-piece funk phenom "Five Alarm Funk". As part of a brand new horn section, Spence spent 2 very busy years with "FAF" as they grew into an unstoppable force in the Vancouver live music scene. His energetic stage presence and squealing solos consistently fueled the flames of the bands stardom. His alto sax playing is featured on FAF's self-titled debut album which is distributed by (tm)Warner Canada. Spence tearfully parted ways with band in April of 2007. He is missed by Five Alarm Funk fans and band members alike.

Andrew's studio playing is in high demand. He has worked with top producers such as Rennie Pilgrem, Jay Tripwire, Dave Ogilvie, Roger Swan, DJ Ali (Aly Meghi), and more. Spence's versatility and ability to model his playing to numerous music styles makes him a great addition to any project. His sound on the tenor, alto, and soprano saxes is bright, modern, soulful and relentlessly funky. Although he has an excellent Jazz vocabulary, Spence's playing leans more towards more a "Fusion" or "Commercial" sound (don't say Rock!).
